About this Issue

Invincible #26 is the debut issue for Oliver Grayson — the Viltrumite-Thraxan hybrid who would grow into one of the most complex supporting characters in Robert Kirkman's run, eventually operating under the alias Kid Omni-Man. The issue also marks the first appearance of Andressa, the Thraxan leader and Oliver's mother, and the first comics appearance of the alien world Thraxa itself, expanding the Invincible universe's cosmic mythology in a meaningful way. Coming hard on the heels of the seismic Omni-Man reveal in issue #11, issue #26 deepens the emotional fallout of that moment by forcing Mark Grayson into a tearful reunion with his exiled father — now ruling a new planet and harboring an entirely new family — which sets the stage for years of brotherly drama between Mark and Oliver. The issue is part two of the 'A Different World' arc, a storyline that permanently altered the series' scope from an Earth-bound coming-of-age superhero story to a genuinely galactic one.

History

Written by Robert Kirkman, penciled and inked by Ryan Ottley, lettered by Rus Wooton, and colored by Bill Crabtree, issue #26 was published by Image Comics in September 2005 as the second chapter of the 'A Different World' arc (issues #25–30), which was later collected in the sixth trade paperback volume. The issue was produced during the period when Ottley had fully taken over art duties from series co-creator Cory Walker, solidifying the visual identity the book would carry through its long run. As a bonus, the issue included pin-up pages by Derek S. Hunter, Chris Giarrusso, and John Paul Little, a common value-add practice Kirkman used during this era of the title.

  • First appearance of Andressa, the Thraxan leader who becomes Nolan Grayson's second wife and Oliver's mother.
  • First appearance of Thraxa, the alien insectoid world where Nolan Grayson established himself as ruler after fleeing Earth.

  • The issue delivers the emotionally pivotal reunion between Mark Grayson and his exiled father Nolan, the first time they meet since Nolan's brutal attack on Mark in issue #11.
  • The story content of this issue has been reprinted in: Invincible Vol. 6 trade paperback 'A Different World' (2006), Invincible: The Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 hardcover (2007), Invincible Compendium Vol. 1 (2011), and the Spanish-language Invencible (ECC Ediciones) Vol. 3 (2021).
  • Oliver Grayson went on to become a major recurring character throughout all 144 issues of the series, eventually playing a crucial role in the Viltrumite War story arc and appearing in the Amazon Prime Video animated adaptation beginning in Season 2.
