Invincible #2 is one of the densest debut-cluster issues in modern creator-owned superhero comics, introducing in a single 32-page story the Teen Team (Robot, Atom Eve, Rex Splode, and Dupli-Kate), the Mauler Twins, a cameo of Allen the Alien, the planet Viltrum via Omni-Man's origin flashback, and the first full civilian/hero appearance of Atom Eve — a character who would grow into the emotional backbone of the entire 144-issue series. The sheer volume of durable cast members established here, all of whom returned repeatedly across the run and its spin-offs, demonstrates Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker's confidence in world-building from the ground up, without the safety net of an existing IP. Invincible launched in January 2003 as part of a superhero line championed by Image's Jim Valentino, with writer Robert Kirkman and co-creator/artist Cory Walker — veterans of their earlier collaboration on Kirkman's self-published Battle Pope — producing the series together. Walker drew issues #1 through #7, establishing the character designs and clean visual grammar that defined the book's look; the creative partnership had solidified enough by issue #2 that Kirkman recalled leaning heavily on Walker throughout production, not just for pencils but for ongoing input on characters and plotting. The series launched with modest retailer orders and sales that, by Kirkman's own account, dipped toward cancellation territory around issue #6, meaning the world-building packed into this early issue was crafted under real commercial pressure rather than from a position of guaranteed longevity.
