Invincible #19
Invincible #19 is the first appearance of Battle Beast, a leonine alien warrior who proved immediately stronger than both Mark Grayson and the entire reconstituted Guardians of the Globe — a genuinely shocking power-level demonstration that redefined what a 'one-off villain' could accomplish in the series. That single entrance planted the seed for one of Invincible's most beloved supporting characters, whose arc across the remaining 125 issues — culminating in a fatal clash with Thragg — became a cornerstone of the mythology. The issue also marks the first appearances of Magnattack, Magmaniac, and Tether Tyrant, collectively making it the single densest debut issue in the series for new villains. Its narrative weight was ultimately validated when the Kirkman–Ottley creative team returned decades later to build an entire ongoing spin-off series, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast (2025), explicitly set in the gap between this issue and issue #55.

Written by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Ryan Ottley with colors by Bill Crabtree, issue #19 was published by Image Comics in November 2004, roughly eighteen months into the series' run — a period when Kirkman was simultaneously launching The Walking Dead and establishing Invincible as Image's flagship superhero title. Ottley, who had come aboard as series artist on issue #8, recalled that he and Kirkman conceived Battle Beast as a way to expand Invincible's rogues' gallery, with no certainty at the time whether the character would survive past his debut. The issue also includes short backup stories credited to writers Benito Cereno and Eric Stephenson with art by Nate Bellegarde and Terry Stevens respectively, a format common to Invincible's early run.
