The story explores family bonds and the burden of super-speed across generations, with creative work from a team of DC talent.
In "The Single Synapse Theory," Bart faces a day without his usual speed, while Jay, Linda, Jenni, and Iris visit Max in the hospital. When Savitar’s ninjas launch a surprise attack, Max channels the Speed Force to empower Johnny—just as a sudden surge across all speedsters brings Impulse rushing in to save the day. Written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Humberto Ramos, with inks by Wayne Faucher, colors by Tom McCraw, and letters by Chris Eliopoulos, the cover by Ramos and Faucher captures the intensity of the moment.
In "Dead Heat, First Lap: Flatfooted," Jay and Jesse find their powers slipping away just as Wally faces off against a wave of ninjas dispatched by Savitar—a mysterious new disciple of the Speed Force intent on siphoning speed from every hero who runs.
In "Dead Heat! Second Lap: A Swiftly Tilting Planet," Wally, Jay, Jesse, and Linda race across the country to Alabama, where Impulse and XS are under siege by a new wave of ninjas. As Wally fights off the attackers and uncovers shocking truths in Max Mercury’s old files, he’s forced to confront the origins of Savitar—just as Max himself returns, broken and desperate, setting the stage for a desperate final stand.
In "Dead Heat, Second Lap: Disaffected Youth," Bart faces a day stripped of his usual speed, while Jay, Linda, Jenni, and Iris stand by Max in the hospital. When Johnny arrives, Savitar’s ninjas launch a brutal assault to finish what they started—only for Max to channel the Speed Force and pass his power to Johnny in a desperate bid to hold them off. A sudden surge across the speed force, triggered by Savitar’s momentary loss of control, brings Impulse racing in just in time to turn the tide.
In "Dead Heat, Fourth Lap: Cut to the Quick," Wally and Jesse push through Savitar's citadel, facing not only the relentless speedster lord but also Christina Alexandrova, a formidable new rival on the track. With time running out and the Speed Force itself under siege, their desperate fight creates just enough opening for Max, Jay, Johnny, and Bart to arrive—just in time to turn the tide.
In "Dead Heat, Final Lap: Godspeed," Wally West faces off against Savitar in a high-stakes race through the Speed Force, using his courage and connection to the Flash legacy to challenge Savitar’s rage. As the final lap begins, Wally turns the tide not with speed, but with a hard-won truth—convincing Savitar that his vengeance should be aimed at him alone.
