The black-and-white omnibus edition gathers issues from the series' Bronze Age era, showcasing the Hulk's rampages and rare moments of alliance with other heroes.
In "The Sword and the Sorcerer!", Bruce Banner awakens on Walter Newell’s boat only to vanish when they return to New York City. As Newell scrambles to track him down before the Hulk wreaks havoc, a clash erupts between Sting-Ray and the raging green giant—leaving the Hulk’s whereabouts unknown once more. Written by Roger Stern and brought to life by Sal Buscema’s dynamic art with inks by Alfredo Alcala and letters by Denise Wohl, this Essential Hulk installment delivers a tense, character-driven chase. The cover, by Ron Validar and Ernie Chan, captures the moment’s urgency with striking detail.
In "Vicious Circle!", the Hulk is thrust back into the past by the time-traveling Kronus, forced to relive the traumatic events that birthed him in a desperate bid to erase the monster he became. With the weight of his origin pressing down, he must confront the moment that turned him into the Jade Giant—before it’s too late.
In "Beware the Beehive!", Paragon emerges from a mysterious cocoon linked to Adam Warlock’s origins, aided by Doctor Strange’s mystic guidance. As Paragon returns to the cocoon to complete his transformation, the lab erupts in chaos—Hulk-style—leaving the cocoon lost beneath the sea.
When the Absorbing Man is sent to hunt down the Hulk, Bruce Banner finds unexpected help in his new friend April Sommers, who helps him secure a job at a construction site. Meanwhile, at Gamma Base, Doc Samson grapples with the mystery of his amnesiac patient, as the pieces of a larger puzzle begin to shift.
In "The Monster and the Mystic!", the Hulk finds himself trapped in a mystical arena, forced to battle the savage Mongu under the watchful eye of the enigmatic Maha Yogi. Meanwhile, General Ross grapples with the sudden absence of Betty, while Jim Wilson becomes the target of a mysterious scheme with no clear motive.
In "Show Me the Way to Go Home," Bruce Banner wakes aboard Walter Newell’s boat, slipping away as they return to New York City. When Newell realizes his mysterious passenger was Banner all along, he races to stop the Hulk before the beast can strike—leading to a clash between Sting-Ray and the Hulk, and then the sudden, unsettling disappearance of the green giant.
