“The Altar and the Scorpion!”

In "The Altar and the Scorpion!", Conan listens as N’Yaga recounts the tragic tale of Bêlit, the rightful heir to Asaglun’s throne betrayed by her uncle Nim-Karrak, who murdered her father and seized the crown. Raised in secret by N’Yaga and believed to be the daughter of the goddess Derketa, Bêlit rose as the tribe’s greatest warrior—only to be betrayed by her jealous chief, Uzumi, in a mission meant to end her life. Now, as a pirate seeking vengeance, her path crosses with Conan’s in a story of blood, myth, and destiny. Written by Roy Thomas and brought to life with dynamic art by John Buscema, inks by Steve Gan, colors by Michele Wolfman, and letters by Joe Rosen, this tale unfolds under a cover by Frank Cho.

Conan hears the story of Bêlit from N’Yaga's lips. Bêlit is the rightful heir to the throne of Asaglun. When she was a child, her uncle Nim-Karrak overthrew and killed her father, the king. N'Yaga saved her life and rejoined his tribe, where he spread the legend that Bêlit was the daughter of Derketa, Goddess of Death. Bêlit grew up to become the best warrior of the tribe. The jealous Chief Uzumi sent her on a suicide mission to reclaim a relic from the Mound-Dwellers, but ended up getting killed himself. As the new chief, Bêlit turned to piracy in order to raise funds for her revenge.
