Checkmate #16
In "Shadow Knights," Checkmate’s mission to retrieve Megala from Project Atom takes a dangerous turn when the captured scientist activates a hidden device in his chair, setting off a chain reaction. As Major Force is dispatched to recover him, Harry questions Waller’s increasingly reckless Janus Directive—leading him to take matters into his own hands. Meanwhile, Gary, Val, and Black Thorn launch a daring infiltration of Belle Reve, only to clash with the Suicide Squad, giving Waller the opening she needs to vanish. Written by Paul Kupperberg and illustrated by Rick Hoberg, with inks by Al Vey, colors by Julianna Ferriter, and letters by Gaspar Saladino, this 1989 issue features a cover by Gil Kane.
