Checkmate #4
Checkmate #4 (July 1988) is the first appearance of Knight Winston Churchill O'Donnell, one of the series' recurring field operatives whose career threads through the original 33-issue run and into later crossover appearances. The issue also marks the debut of Kalia Campbell, who would go on to hold the significant rank of Queen within the agency — a long-term narrative arc that made her one of the more enduring characters introduced in the early issues of Paul Kupperberg's espionage-focused series. As part of the young Checkmate! title — itself only the fourth issue of a series that had spun directly out of Action Comics #598 just months earlier — this issue helped establish the procedural, globe-trotting storytelling template the book would use throughout its run, including the Venice-set lead story and the debut installment of a multi-part backup feature tracing how a Pawn earns promotion to Knight.

The Checkmate organization was created by writer Paul Kupperberg and artist Steve Erwin, growing out of 'the Agency' concept that Kupperberg had developed in Vigilante, and it graduated to its own ongoing title in April 1988. By issue #4, the creative engine was already in full swing: Kupperberg wrote both the main story and the backup, with Steve Erwin and inker Al Vey handling the lead feature while veteran artist Don Heck penciled the backup — a multi-part 'making of a Knight' serial that began here. The cover was provided by Gil Kane with Dick Giordano on inks, and Jonathan Peterson served as editor. The dual-story format introduced in this issue — a self-contained espionage mission abroad alongside a serialized character-development backup — became a defining structural feature of the series across its middle issues.
