This Beadle's Dime Library issue features "Rocky Mountain Rob: The California Outlaw—The Vigilantes of Humbug Bar" by Albert W. Aiken. In Chapter II, "Judge Lynch," two men—Dick Talbot and a Native American named O-wa-he (called "Mud-turtle")—face a lynch mob at Barrel Camp mining settlement after a shooting quarrel. Three ringleaders (Jim York, Kangaroo Denton, and Rackensack Bill) demand summary execution, but a mysterious young stranger on horseback intervenes, convincing the miners to hold a trial instead. He offers to defend the prisoners. The jury acquits them with the condition they leave camp. The stranger cryptically reveals he has been hunting Talbot for a year and vows to kill him within another year. Chapter III jumps ahead one year to the Humbug Diggings near Bannock City, Montana, introducing a coach driver named Bob Shook and passengers traveling the Indian trail.
