Olyoptics
Steve Oliff, born February 20, 1954, is an American colorist who has shaped the visual texture of comics under the studio imprint Olyoptics since entering the industry in 1978. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has accumulated credits on 264 issues, with his most sustained contributions appearing on titles such as Spawn, The Maxx, Airboy, Pitt, Cyberforce, and Strikeback!
Oliff came to prominence at a time when comic book coloring was undergoing a significant technical transformation, and his work helped push the medium toward more sophisticated, painterly approaches to color. His output through Olyoptics became closely associated with the early Image Comics era of the 1990s, where titles demanded a richer, more dynamic palette than mainstream superhero books had traditionally employed. The variety of his credits — ranging from grounded action books to more surreal, character-driven work like The Maxx — demonstrates a versatility that kept him relevant across shifting trends in the industry.
Still active as recently as 2024, Oliff's longevity reflects both his adaptability and the consistent demand for his sensibility. His contributions helped elevate coloring from a largely unheralded craft to a recognized artistic discipline within comics.
