Olyoptics
Steve Oliff, born February 20, 1954, is an American colorist who has shaped the look of comics for more than four decades. Working under the studio name Olyoptics, he entered the industry in 1978 and built a reputation as one of the most technically adventurous colorists of his generation, particularly as the field transitioned from traditional methods to digital production.
His catalog spans over 260 credited issues across a career stretching from 1979 into the mid-2020s. He is most closely associated with a cluster of titles that defined the early Image Comics era, including *Spawn*, *The Maxx*, *Pitt*, and *Cyberforce*, alongside work on *Airboy* and *Strikeback!*. The richly atmospheric, painterly quality he brought to those books helped establish a visual standard for the independent superhero boom of the 1990s.
Oliff's longevity in the field reflects both his adaptability and the sustained demand for his particular sensibility — a color approach that treats mood and atmosphere as inseparable from line art rather than merely decorative. His work under the Olyoptics banner remains a recognizable touchstone for readers and artists who came of age during one of comics' most visually turbulent periods.
