Olyoptics
Steve Oliff, born February 20, 1954, is an American colorist who has shaped the look of comic books across more than four decades of professional work. Operating under the studio name Olyoptics, he entered the industry in 1978 and built a reputation as one of the field's most technically accomplished practitioners, particularly as the craft transitioned from traditional methods into the digital age.
His catalog spans an impressive range of titles, with his most sustained contributions appearing on books such as *Spawn*, *The Maxx*, *Airboy*, *Pitt*, *Cyberforce*, and *Strikeback!* — a body of work that reflects both mainstream superhero publishing and the creator-owned boom of the 1990s. His association with Image Comics titles in particular placed him at the center of one of the industry's most consequential shifts in how color could convey mood, texture, and visual drama on the printed page.
Credited on 264 issues between 1979 and 2024, Oliff demonstrated unusual longevity in a specialty that demands both artistic sensitivity and a willingness to adapt to evolving technology. His continued activity into the 2020s speaks to an enduring relevance that few colorists of his generation have matched.
