Olyoptics

Steve Oliff, born February 20, 1954, is an American colorist whose work under the studio name Olyoptics has shaped the visual language of comics for more than four decades. He entered the industry in 1978, and his catalog credits stretch from 1979 through at least 2024 — a remarkable span of sustained professional activity across 264 issues.

Oliff built much of his reputation through his association with Image Comics in its formative years, lending his palette to high-profile titles including *Spawn*, *The Maxx*, *Pitt*, and *Cyberforce*. His work on *The Maxx* in particular drew wide attention for its painterly, psychologically charged color — a fitting complement to Sam Kieth's surrealist line work. He also contributed meaningfully to independent titles such as *Airboy* and *Strikeback!*, demonstrating a range that moved comfortably between gritty superhero action and more stylized storytelling.

Olyoptics became synonymous with a sophisticated, fully rendered approach to comic book color at a time when the industry was transitioning away from flat, process-color printing. Oliff was among the pioneers who treated coloring as genuine artistic authorship rather than a mechanical finishing step, influencing how later generations of colorists thought about tone, mood, and light. His longevity in the field — remaining active well into the 2020s — speaks to both his adaptability and the enduring regard his peers and publishers hold for his craft.
