Marc Hempel
1957–
Marc Hempel, born May 25, 1957, is an American cartoonist and comics artist whose angular, expressive style found its widest audience in Neil Gaiman’s *The Sandman*. He is best known for illustrating the celebrated "The Kindly Ones" story arc, where his jagged, almost puppet-like figures gave Dream’s final journey a stark, theatrical intensity. Hempel’s path into comics began in the late 1970s, and he spent years honing a distinctive voice on independent and licensed titles alike. His credits include work on *Jonny Quest*, *Mars*, *TUG & Buster*, *Tarzan the Warrior*, *Breathtaker*, and *Swamp Thing*, often handling art, coloring, inking, lettering, and writing across a career spanning from 1977 to 2022. A key collaborator was writer Mark Wheatley, with whom he co-created the series *Mars* and *Breathtaker*. Hempel’s style—lean, exaggerated, and emotionally direct—set him apart from the mainstream, and his contributions to *The Sandman* remain a high point in that landmark series. Later in life, he continued to work in comics and illustration, though his output became more sporadic. He has not received major industry awards, but his influence is felt in the off-kilter character design and storytelling that defined much of 1990s alternative and fantasy comics.
