“Chapter One Now Where Did I Leave My Ki?”
About this Collection

This volume collects the complete story of Jen Dik Seong, a Korean-American teenager in Los Angeles who is a gifted martial artist but finds herself struggling with the complexities of love, friendship, and identity. Written by Mike Carey and illustrated by Sonny Liew and Marc Hempel, this coming-of-age tale was published under DC's Minx Books imprint, which aimed to create graphic novels for a young adult female audience. The story explores themes of cultural expectations and self-discovery through Jen's journey in the world of competitive hapkido and her misguided attempts to win the affection of a crush by giving him an expensive gift intended for someone else.

In "Chapter One Now Where Did I Leave My Ki?", Mike Carey and Sonny Liew launch a sharp, character-driven story where a championship match becomes a crucible for pride, regret, and unexpected transformation. As Dixie battles for the national hapkido title, tensions flare with Adam over a misplaced gift—and a single statuette becomes a lightning rod for emotions neither can quite name. With Sonny Liew’s expressive art and Marc Hempel’s precise inks bringing every tense moment to life, this issue captures the quiet weight of second chances, all set under a cover by Liew and Hempel that perfectly mirrors its emotional core.

Although flummoxed by Adam's request Dixie wins her bout decisively, then runs from the building to be by herself. On her return Adam repeatedly tries to apologize, over Dixie's objection that he's messing with her head before the match. To Adam's horror Dillinger gives Dixie the statuette, which she gleefully smashes before Adam's eyes. She then demolishes him in the final bout to become national hapkido champion, and takes Dillinger to meet her parents.
