Kelly Freas
Frank Kelly Freas was an American artist whose career in science fiction and fantasy illustration spanned more than five decades. Born on August 27, 1922, and passing on January 2, 2005, he earned the informal title "Dean of Science Fiction Artists" and was the second artist inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Freas began his professional path in the 1940s, contributing covers and interiors to pulp magazines, and quickly became a defining visual voice for the genre. His signature style combined meticulous draftsmanship with a warm, often humorous humanism, making alien worlds and future technologies feel accessible. He is best known for his long association with *Mad* magazine, where his satirical illustrations and painted covers became iconic. His most-credited titles include *Mad*, *Svenska Mad*, *Gespenster Geschichten*, and several *Mad* collections. Among his notable co-creations is the famous 1953 *Astounding Science Fiction* cover featuring a robot cradling a limp man, later adapted for Queen's *News of the World* album. Freas collaborated extensively with writers like Isaac Asimov and editors like John W. Campbell. He continued working into the 2000s, leaving a legacy of warmth and wit that influenced generations of illustrators. His awards include multiple Hugo Awards for Best Professional Artist.
