Jean Dufaux
Jean Dufaux, born on 7 June 1949 in Belgium, is one of the more prolific and versatile writers working in Franco-Belgian comics. Before turning to the medium, he built his early career as a journalist for Ciné-presse, and that background in storytelling and research would prove useful when he made the transition to comics writing in the 1980s.
Over four decades of activity — spanning from 1985 through at least the mid-2020s — Dufaux has accumulated credits across some 260 issues, working primarily as a writer but also taking on roles as artist and inker at various points. His output spans a notably wide range of genres and tones. Among his most prominent titles are the Renaissance-set adventure series Giacomo C., the noir-inflected Jessica Blandy, the Roman historical epic Murena, the swashbuckling Barracuda, and the thriller Niklos Koda. That breadth alone speaks to a writer comfortable moving between period drama, pulp crime, and action-adventure without settling into a single register.
Dufaux's work tends toward rich atmosphere and morally complex characters, qualities that have earned him lasting readership in the European market. While specific award citations are not noted in available sources, his sustained presence at the top tier of Belgian comics writing over roughly forty years represents a considerable body of work and a meaningful place in the Franco-Belgian tradition.
