Jeff
Jeff is the short, bowler-hat-wearing half of the classic comedy duo Mutt and Jeff, originally created for newspaper comic strips and later reprinted in DC comic books. He serves as the bumbling, good-natured foil to his tall partner Augustus Mutt.
Few comic characters can claim roots as deep as Jeff, whose debut in Mutt and Jeff #6 back in 1919 makes him a genuine Platinum Age original β one of the earliest recurring figures to find a home at what would become DC Comics. Over an astonishing span stretching more than a century to 2022, he's graced the pages of Mutt & Jeff, All-American Comics, and Leave It to Binky, rubbing elbows in that legendary anthology with none other than Superman, Green Lantern, and their alter egos Clark Kent and Alan Scott. Bud Fisher's creation carries real collector weight too, with five key-issue appearances to his name across 74 catalog entries. That kind of longevity β from the Platinum Age all the way into the modern era β is something even the most iconic superheroes rarely match, and it makes Jeff a fascinating piece of comics history well worth seeking out.
