“Afraid of a Stole”

The cover of this 1957 DC comedy gem says it all: Jeff, decked out in full tenor regalia, is posted on an Opera House bill as "A. Mutt, Tenor — Singing Tonight," while the shorter, top-hatted Mutt stands outside hawking ear muffs for rent at 50 cents a pair — a gag so perfectly timed it barely needs a punchline. A startled figure in period costume reacts with alarm at the doorway, completing the delightful scene rendered with crisp, expressive charm by cover artist Sheldon Mayer. With all-new stories written and drawn by Al Smith inside, issue #93 is a fine example of why Mutt & Jeff remained one of comics' most enduring comedy duos.
