Grizzly
Maxwell Markham was a brutal professional wrestler whose career was destroyed after J. Jonah Jameson exposed his dangerous in-ring tactics. Seeking revenge, he obtained a specially engineered exoskeleton resembling a grizzly bear, granting him superhuman strength to battle Spider-Man.
Few characters capture the rough-and-tumble spirit of Bronze Age Marvel quite like Grizzly, who lumbered onto the scene in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #139 in 1974, courtesy of the legendary team of Gerry Conway and Ross Andru. Over more than five decades — a remarkable run stretching from 1974 all the way to 2026 — this Marvel bruiser has kept some seriously heavyweight company, sharing pages with Spider-Man, J. Jonah Jameson, Norman Osborn, and Maxwell Markham across titles like Thunderbolts, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Punisher War Journal. With 46 catalog appearances and at least one recognized key issue to his name, Grizzly is the kind of deep-cut Marvel figure that rewards the curious collector — a Bronze Age original who has stubbornly refused to fade into the back-issue bins.
