About this Issue

Gwenpool #2 (2025) is the issue in which Gwen Poole — the original Gwenpool — is killed by her dark doppelganger X-31, a moment the series itself frames as a deliberate callback to Wolverine's killing of Jean Grey in New X-Men #148. That death propels the entire back half of the five-issue miniseries and represents a bold structural choice: sidelining the title character mid-arc so the story can interrogate the weight of legacy deaths in superhero comics, particularly the resonance of Gwen Stacy's original demise for Peter Parker. The issue also deepens the arc's central mystery around the enigmatic Great Architect — a villain whose eventual unmasking as an in-universe counterpart of writer Cavan Scott makes the whole series one of Marvel's most overtly meta-fictional exercises since the original Christopher Hastings run. Taken together with issue #1's introductions, issue #2 marks the point at which the 2025 Gwenpool miniseries commits fully to its darker, consequence-driven identity.

History

The 2025 Gwenpool miniseries was announced by Marvel in February 2025 and grew directly out of an editorial directive to resurrect Gwen Stacy — an approach writer Cavan Scott noted was consciously timed to the fiftieth anniversary of the editorial mandate that produced the original 1970s Clone Saga. Scott, best known at Marvel for Star Wars: The High Republic, was brought in to write the five-issue limited series, with artist Stefano Nesi — making his Marvel Comics debut after acclaimed work on Batman at DC — handling pencils and inks, Matt Milla on colors, and Ariana Maher on letters, with Jordan D. White editing. Issue #2 shipped June 18, 2025, with a cover date of August 2025, and carried a T+ rating.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Gwenpool (Gwen Poole) is killed in this issue by X-31 (Gwen Stacy), with the manner of her death scripted as a visual homage to Wolverine killing Jean Grey in New X-Men #148 — a reference Gwenpool herself acknowledges in dialogue.
  • The Great Architect (later revealed across the series to be an in-universe counterpart of writer Cavan Scott) appears as the principal antagonist orchestrating X-31's missions.
  • Grizzly (Maxwell Markham) appears as an antagonist in this issue.
  • Photon (Monica Rambeau) and She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters) appear as members of the AVENG.E.R.S. (Avengers Emergency Response Squad).
  • Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), and Jeff the Land Shark continue as supporting characters, making this issue a sustained team ensemble around the Gwenpool franchise.
  • Written by Cavan Scott, with art by Stefano Nesi (pencils and inks), colors by Matt Milla, letters by Ariana Maher, and a cover by Chad Hardin with Edgar Delgado — the same core creative team as issue #1.
  • The issue carries four variant covers: a Lesley 'Leirix' Li Gwenpool Variant, a 1:50 Lesley 'Leirix' Li Virgin Variant, a Gerald Parel Variant, and a Joshua Cassara 'Fantastic!' Variant.
  • This is the second issue of a planned five-issue limited series — the first solo Gwenpool series since The Unbelievable Gwenpool concluded in April 2018.
