Gamora

229 appearances · Bronze Age · 1975–2026 · 6 key issues
Who is Gamora?

The sole survivor of the Zen Whoberi people after a genocidal massacre, Gamora was taken in by the cosmic warlord Thanos, who raised and genetically enhanced her — augmenting her strength, speed, and healing — to serve as his personal assassin and the deadliest woman in the galaxy.

Born into the cosmic wilds of Marvel's Bronze Age, Gamora made her mark in 1975's Strange Tales #180, co-created by the legendary Jim Starlin during one of comics' most ambitious eras for space-faring mythology. Over more than five decades — and across 207 catalog appearances — she has proven herself one of Marvel's most enduring cosmic figures, racking up six key collector issues along the way. Her world is populated by some of the most compelling characters in the galaxy: she shares adventures with Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, and Groot, and her name is woven deeply into titles like Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, and The Thanos Imperative. If you're drawn to Bronze Age cosmic storytelling at its richest, Gamora is absolutely essential reading.

Trivia

  • Thanos had Gamora's body rebuilt with a combination of cybernetic and biological enhancements, which is precisely why so many of her abilities are explicitly portrayed in the comics as engineered rather than purely natural.en.wikipedia.org
  • Gamora played a central role in Annihilation: Conquest before joining the spin-off Guardians of the Galaxy series that helped reintroduce the team to mainstream readers well before the MCU turned them into household names.en.wikipedia.org
  • During the Infinity Countdown and Infinity Wars era, Gamora adopted the identity Requiem and stood at the center of one of Marvel's most controversial modern cosmic twists, which included killing Thanos himself and triggering a major status-quo reset.en.wikipedia.org
  • Brian Michael Bendis has written more of Gamora's comics than any other writer in our catalog — 25 issues.
