The Black Pirates capture John and Phaidor and take them deep within the bowels of Barsoom. They are brought before Issus, an aged crone that rules her people as if she were a beautiful goddess. She makes Phaidor one of her slaves and sentences John and Dator to become arena gladiators. While John is waiting his turn to fight, he finds that Carthoris, his son, is champion of the arena.
