John, Carthoris and Xodar escape the gladiator arena of Issus and make their way back to Helium. There John learns that Dejah along with her father and grandfather have traveled to the far North looking for him. They have left Zat Arras as regent in their absence and he immediately puts John on trial for the blasphemy of returning alive from the Valley of Dor.
