Uncanny X-Men Vol. 3 #1 opened a new chapter for Marvel's flagship mutant title under the Marvel NOW! initiative by recasting Cyclops — fresh from killing Professor X during Avengers vs. X-Men — not as a straightforward villain but as a morally complicated revolutionary, forcing readers to hold two legitimate readings of the same man in tension simultaneously. The issue introduced Fabio Medina (later Goldballs, then Egg), a character who initially seemed played for comedy but whose debut here would prove foundational to the entire Krakoan resurrection mythology decades later. It also marked the first full appearance of Eva Bell as Tempus, a time-manipulating mutant whose subsequent solo arc became one of the most inventive character studies of the era. Structurally, the issue's framing device — Magneto secretly informing on his own team to S.H.I.E.L.D. — seeded a sustained espionage subplot that distinguished this series tonally from every other X-Men book on the stands at the time.

History

The series was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2012 and confirmed by artist Chris Bachalo in November of that year, launching as part of Marvel's line-wide Marvel NOW! publishing initiative. Writer Brian Michael Bendis was simultaneously helming All-New X-Men, and the two series were designed to run in close narrative lockstep — Vol. 3 #1 picks up concurrently with events unfolding in All-New X-Men's first arc, creating a deliberate two-title reading experience. The creative team for this debut issue consisted of Bendis as writer, Bachalo on pencils and colors, with inking shared by Tim Townsend, Jaime Mendoza, and Al Vey; Joe Caramagna provided lettering, with Nick Lowe editing under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. The issue shipped on February 13, 2013, with an April 2013 cover date.
