Kieron Gillen arrived at the helm of this relaunch having already served as Matt Fraction's secret co-plotter and then credited co-writer before taking over sole scripting duties with Uncanny X-Men #534.1 on the outgoing volume — meaning #1 of Vol. 2 was less a cold start than a deliberate escalation of a run already in motion. Editor Nick Lowe and editor-in-chief Axel Alonso paired Gillen with Carlos Pacheco, who had recently drawn X-Men: Schism, giving the debut issue a visual continuity with the event that spawned it. The launch was positioned as the 'Cyclops side' of the Regenesis initiative that simultaneously launched Wolverine and the X-Men #1, with X-Men: Regenesis #1 (written by Gillen and drawn by Billy Tan) serving as the direct prologue that sorted every mutant between the two camps ahead of this issue.
