The series was conceived as part of the second wave of Jonathan Hickman's Ultimate Universe relaunch (Earth-6160), with Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Hickman selecting Peach Momoko — a celebrated cover artist and Stormbreaker — to plot and draw the book, with Zack Davisson (her collaborator from the Demon Days saga) handling script adaptation. Momoko has stated she was encouraged to bring 'something completely new and different,' with no obligation to mirror classic X-Men storytelling, a mandate that shaped every creative choice through issue #18. Issue #18 is collected in the trade paperback Ultimate X-Men by Peach Momoko Vol. 3: The Realm of the Mind alongside issues #13–17, which was edited by Wilson Moss with lettering by VC's Travis Lanham.
