The Defenders #23

The Defenders find themselves in serious trouble on this May 1975 cover, as enormous electrified coils snake around the Hulk, Doctor Strange, Valkyrie, and their companions while the cover copy warns that "the Valkyrie stands alone." Gil Kane's pencils and Klaus Janson's inks deliver a wonderfully chaotic scene packed with sprawling figures and crackling energy, all tied together by the ominous story title "…And the Snakes Shall Inherit the Earth!" Inside, Steve Gerber's writing is paired with Sal Buscema's art, making this a strong creative lineup for one of Marvel's most unconventional team books of the era.
