“State of the Union!”

A massive, white-haired brute in yellow dominates this December 1983 cover, his enormous fist clutching a white-costumed figure while the rest of the New Defenders — including a winged hero, a silvery metallic figure, a caped character on rooftop level, and a small golden armored figure — scramble against him across a cityscape backdrop. Mike Zeck's pencils and John Beatty's inks give the scene a real sense of scale and urgency, with the team looking genuinely outmatched against this hulking threat. "State of the Union!" promises plenty of action from J. M. DeMatteis and Alan Kupperberg as this eclectic squad faces what looks like an overwhelming challenge.
