Issue #667 was written by Dan Slott — already the sole ongoing writer on Amazing Spider-Man following his 'Big Time' run — with interior pencils by Humberto Ramos, inks by Carlos Cuevas, and colors by Edgar Delgado, a creative team that had worked together on earlier arcs beginning with #648. The 'Spider-Island' storyline was carefully seeded months in advance through a six-part backup feature called 'Infested,' which ran in ASM issues #659–665 and depicted the Jackal's experiments leading up to the main event; those backups were later compiled in a standalone reprint, Amazing Spider-Man: Infested. Marvel published #667 on August 10, 2011, alongside a substantial array of variant covers, including a 1:100 retailer-incentive painted cover by Gabriele Dell'Otto — an early example of Marvel's then-escalating practice of high-ratio incentive covers designed to encourage larger retailer orders.
