Amazing Spider-Man #545 is the concluding chapter of 'One More Day,' the four-part crossover that erased Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's marriage from continuity — one of the most consequential and debated editorial decisions in Marvel history. By having Peter and Mary Jane accept Mephisto's bargain, the issue simultaneously wiped out Peter's publicly known secret identity (revealed during Civil War) and brought Harry Osborn back from the dead, resetting the Spider-Man status quo in a single stroke. The issue launched 'Brand New Day,' after which The Amazing Spider-Man became a thrice-monthly anthology-style title with rotating creative teams, fundamentally restructuring how the flagship Spider-Man series was produced and read. More than fifteen years after publication, the Peter–MJ marriage still had not been restored in mainstream continuity, making this one of the rare single issues whose story consequences genuinely outlasted the controversy that surrounded its release.

The 'One More Day' arc was conceived by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, who had long sought a way to dissolve the Peter–Mary Jane marriage and return Spider-Man to what he considered a more versatile single-man status quo; he personally approached J. Michael Straczynski — who was already planning to end his six-year run on the title — and proposed it as Straczynski's final project. The four issues were originally solicited for weekly release in August 2007, but suffered repeated delays because Quesada's penciling duties on the arc conflicted directly with his editorial responsibilities; Amazing Spider-Man #545 was ultimately resolicited twice, finally shipping December 27, 2007, with a January 2008 cover date. Straczynski publicly distanced himself from the conclusion, stating that editorial overrode his preferences and that he had requested his name be removed from the final two issues — a request Marvel denied, so the writing credit remains co-shared with Quesada. The issue carries interior art by Quesada (inked by Danny Miki, colored by Richard Isanove, lettered by Chris Eliopoulos), with a primary cover also by Quesada and a variant cover by Marko Djurdjevic; it also reprints, as a bonus feature, a condensed version of the Peter–Mary Jane wedding story from Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21.
