History

After the Clone Saga left the Spider-Man franchise critically weakened, Marvel ended the original Amazing Spider-Man volume at #441 (November 1998) and handed the relaunch to writer Howard Mackie and penciler John Byrne, who was simultaneously producing the retcon miniseries Spider-Man: Chapter One — both projects launched in tandem as part of the same editorial initiative. Byrne penciled the first 18 issues of the new volume, with Scott Hanna on inks and Ralph Macchio editing under editor-in-chief Bob Harras; Byrne also plotted the stories while Mackie scripted them. The double-sized debut issue was released on November 11, 1998 with a January 1999 cover date, and included a variant 'sunburst' cover also drawn by Byrne.
