About this Issue

Siege: X-Men is a thematic crossover package that plants two X-franchise threads inside Marvel's 2010 Siege event, the climax of the Dark Reign era that ended Norman Osborn's reign of sanctioned villainy and ushered in the 'Heroic Age.' The New Mutants chapter — written by Kieron Gillen with art by Niko Henrichon — is the more historically significant piece: it delivers the first appearance of the Dísir, a band of cannibalistic, soul-devouring Asgardian shades who would recur across Thor and New Mutants stories for years, and it pays off the long-running plot thread of Dani Moonstar's debt to Hela established during the Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia crossover. The Dark Wolverine arc ('Godlike') by Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu is notable for its exploration of Daken's chaotic psyche through the lens of the Norns/Fates, who see him as a potential catalyst for a new Ragnarok — a characterization that distinguished him from his father and fueled his long post-Siege solo series.

In "Godlike Part 1," Daken stands amid the aftermath of a brutal confrontation, believing he has slain Norman Osborn—only to be confronted by the Asgardian Fates, who reveal the truth behind his actions. Written by Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu, with striking art by Giuseppe Camuncoli and Onofrio Catacchio, this pivotal issue unfolds as Daken grapples with his destiny, facing the Fates’ vision of him as the harbinger of Ragnarok. The cover by Salvador Larroca captures the intensity of his defiance, as the son of Wolverine prepares to challenge fate itself.

History

Dark Wolverine #82–84 was written by the series co-writers Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu with pencils by Giuseppe Camuncoli, continuing their run on a title that had launched as a Wolverine: Origins spin-off and rebranded around Daken as a Dark Avenger. New Mutants #11 was handled by a guest creative team: writer Kieron Gillen, then building his Marvel profile on Thor and S.W.O.R.D., and artist Niko Henrichon (known for Pride of Baghdad), with a cover by Terry Dodson. The companion Siege: Storming Asgard – Heroes & Villains one-shot (cover-dated March 2010, on sale January 27, 2010) was assembled by writer John Thomas with art by Jess Harrold and Dugan Trodglen as an in-universe H.A.M.M.E.R. intelligence dossier on the combatants; Marvel collected all three components into a premiere hardcover (August 2010, ISBN 978-0-7851-4815-9) and a subsequent TPB (November 2010).

Trivia · 8 facts

  • The collection gathers Dark Wolverine #82–84 ('Godlike,' cover dates approximately March–May 2010), New Mutants (Vol. 3) #11 (May 2010), and the Siege: Storming Asgard – Heroes & Villains one-shot (March 2010).
  • New Mutants #11 contains the FIRST APPEARANCE of the Dísir — ancient, cursed Asgardian shades capable of devouring the souls of gods — who become recurring antagonists in the Thor and New Mutants titles during Kieron Gillen's subsequent run.
  • The New Mutants chapter pays off Dani Moonstar's debt to Hela established in Dark Avengers #8, where she bargained for the power to fight a god (Ares) during the Utopia crossover; here Hela calls in that marker, temporarily restoring Dani's Valkyrie abilities to guide the souls of slain Asgardians.
  • The Dark Wolverine arc ('Godlike') was written by Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli; it depicts the Norns (Fates) — identified in the catalog as Skuld, Urd, and Verdandi — choosing Daken as a potential mortal agent of Ragnarok now that Asgard has been severed from its cosmic anchor.
  • New Mutants #11 was written by Kieron Gillen with art by Niko Henrichon as a guest creative team; the issue takes place immediately following the events of Siege #3.
  • The Siege: Storming Asgard – Heroes & Villains one-shot functions as an in-universe H.A.M.M.E.R. intelligence dossier profiling the key combatants of the Siege event, which accounts for the large number of heroes and villains — Avengers, Dark Avengers, Asgardians — indexed from this collection.
  • New Mutants #11 has been reprinted multiple times: in this Siege: X-Men collection, in the New Mutants Vol. 2: Necrosha trade paperback, in Siege: Thor, and in the Thor Modern Era Epic Collection: The Siege of Asgard.
  • The Siege event that this collection ties into ran January–May 2010 and concluded the 'Dark Reign' era begun after Secret Invasion, directly leading to Marvel's 'Heroic Age' initiative.
