About this Issue

Savage Dragon #77 is a pivotal chapter in Erik Larsen's long-running alternate-reality storyline, delivering the first appearances of a future incarnation of WildStar, the villain Crustacean, and the enigmatic Blue Chunks — all within a devastated parallel Earth whose lore reshapes the series' cosmology for years to come. The issue also exemplifies a distinctive editorial philosophy unique to the Larsen era of Image: embedding fully realized back-up strips from other independent creators — Don Simpson's Megaton Man, Karl Hornell's Savage Dragonbert, and Chris Eliopoulos's Desperate Times — turning a single issue into a showcase for the broader independent comics ecosystem. As part of the ongoing series that Wikipedia notes is the longest-running full-color comic written and drawn entirely by a single creator, every issue contributes to a sustained, creator-owned narrative record with few peers in the medium.

History

The issue was produced entirely by Erik Larsen — story and art — with lettering by Chris Eliopoulos and colors by Reuben Rude and Abel Mouton, following the standard creative configuration Larsen maintained through this period of the ongoing series. It shipped in July 2000 as the series was deep into a multi-issue arc in which Dragon's consciousness finds itself stranded in an alternate, post-invasion Earth, a thread that Wikipedia's series overview cites as anchoring several issues around this time. The variant cover — penciled by Jerry Ordway and inked by Al Gordon — reflects the collaborative spirit Image fostered with guest artists during this era, and the main story and back-ups were later collected in the Savage Dragon Archives trade paperback program.
