About this Issue

NYX (Vol. 2) #5 serves as the climactic finale of the series' opening arc, resolving the street-level political conflict that Kelly and Lanzing built across the first five issues: Sophie Cuckoo defects from the villainous new Quiet Council, uses her telepathy to sever Empath's control over New York City's politicians, and the anti-mutant relocation bill is defeated through community organizing rather than a fist-fight. The issue is the most Sophie-centric chapter of the run — the first time the resurrected Stepford Cuckoo, a character who died heroically in Grant Morrison's New X-Men era, gets an unambiguous solo showcase as a moral agent rather than a background hive-mind member. Structurally it also marks the point where the series' rotating point-of-view format briefly opens up into a genuine ensemble piece, reinforcing the 'found community' thesis that sits at the heart of the entire post-Krakoa NYX project.

History

NYX Vol. 2 was announced by Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort at a SXSW panel and launched in July 2024 as a cornerstone of the 'X-Men: From the Ashes' publishing initiative that reset the X-Men line after the Krakoan Age. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing — previously known for Timeless and Alien: Black, White & Blood — conceived each issue around a different character's human name rather than their codename, a deliberate structural choice to emphasize the characters' civilian identities in a post-Krakoa world where mutants were again hated and displaced. Francesco Mortarino served as the primary interior artist with Elisabetta D'Amico on inks and Raúl Angulo on colors, and Sara Pichelli provided the cover for issue #5; the creative team knew in advance the series would end at issue #10, which allowed them to plan a genuine narrative conclusion rather than an abrupt cancellation.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Cover date: January 2025; release date: November 13, 2024. Published by Marvel Comics, rated T+.
  • Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly; interior pencils by Francesco Mortarino; inks by Elisabetta D'Amico; colors by Raúl Angulo; letters by Joe Sabino; cover by Sara Pichelli.
  • Issue #5 is the designated 'Sophie Cuckoo' chapter — the series structured each of its ten issues around a different cast member's point-of-view, with #5 being Sophie's spotlight installment.
  • The arc climax: Sophie uses her telepathic link to her sisters to burn out Empath's powers, liberating the New York City Council members he had been controlling, and the anti-mutant relocation bill is defeated 22–29 in a Council vote.
  • As a consequence of channeling her power to neutralize Empath, Sophie loses her own telepathic abilities at the end of the issue — a direct narrative cost paid for her defection from the Quiet Council.
  • The issue closes the first arc of the series, which pitted the team (Ms. Marvel, Wolverine/Laura Kinney, Anole, Prodigy, and Sophie Cuckoo) against a rogue Quiet Council consisting of Empath, Julian Keller as 'the Krakoan,' and the Stepford Cuckoos minus Sophie, who were manipulating anti-mutant sentiment to trigger a mutant takeover of the city.
  • The Truthseekers — the anti-mutant street group the cast had been battling — are revealed to be a front for the Purifiers, and are forced to stand down once Empath's influence over the politicians collapses.
  • NYX Vol. 2 ran for 10 issues (July 2024 – April 2025) and was collected in a trade paperback (Vol. 1) covering issues #1–5, published March 2025.
