About this Issue

NYX #4 (October 30, 2024) is the Prodigy-centric chapter of the series' rotating point-of-view structure, and the issue where the Academy X generation's internal fractures become impossible to ignore: David Alleyne, a former New Mutant, Young Avenger, and briefly elected X-Man, is forced to abandon his carefully constructed post-Krakoa civilian life as a history professor to physically confront his old rival Hellion — here operating under the alias 'The Krakoan' — thereby drawing the arc's conspiracy plot into the open. The issue is also the moment Ms. Marvel cracks the Quiet Council's scheme, recognizing that the Krakoan's attacks have served as cover for political assassinations targeting New York City officials, a revelation that drives the remainder of the series. Structurally, the issue exemplifies the series' deliberate approach of using Academy X characters — a generation underrepresented during the Krakoan era — to interrogate what mutant cultural identity means once the utopian experiment of Krakoa has collapsed.

History

The NYX (vol. 2) series, of which this is the fourth issue, was announced by Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 14, 2024, as a component of the line-wide X-Men: From the Ashes relaunch that followed the end of the Krakoan Age. Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly were confirmed as the creative team alongside artist Francesco Mortarino and editor Annalise Bissa; for issue #4 specifically, guest artist Enid Balám replaced Mortarino on interior art, with colorist Raul Angulo and letterer VC's Joe Sabino maintaining continuity from earlier issues. Lanzing and Kelly have described the series as a direct tribute to Academy X storytelling that was largely bypassed during the Krakoan era, intentionally positioning NYX as one of the few 'From the Ashes' titles designed to reckon with the Krakoan Age rather than simply move past it. The series ran for ten issues, concluding in April 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released October 30, 2024 (cover-dated December 2024); the fourth issue of NYX vol. 2, part of the X-Men: From the Ashes publishing initiative.
  • Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly; interior art by guest penciller/inker Enid Balám (replacing series regular Francesco Mortarino); colors by Raul Angulo; letters by VC's Joe Sabino; cover by Sara Pichelli (with Federico Blee on cover colors); edited by Annalise Bissa.
  • The issue is the Prodigy (David Alleyne) spotlight chapter in the series' rotating single-character point-of-view structure — previous issues focused on Ms. Marvel (#1), Wolverine/Laura Kinney (#2), and Anole (#3).
  • Plot centers on Prodigy confronting Hellion (Julian Keller), who has assumed the villainous alias 'The Krakoan' and partnered with Empath's rogue Quiet Council in a scheme to seize political control of New York City.
  • Ms. Marvel deduces in this issue that the Krakoan's attacks have been timed to coincide with the deaths of New York City officials — a smokescreen for political assassinations that are revealed in issue #5 to be part of Empath's plan to install mind-controlled puppets on the city council.
  • The Krakoan persona (Julian Keller/Hellion) first appeared in NYX vol. 2 #1 (July 2024), not in this issue; issue #4 is the first time Prodigy directly battles him and the issue in which his identity and scheme are brought fully into the open.
  • Prodigy's intervention to save Ms. Marvel ends his civilian life: he is subsequently arrested, then released with legal help from Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk), but is fired from his teaching position at Empire State University and blacklisted.
  • The series as a whole ran ten issues (July 2024 – April 2025) and was later collected in trade paperback; Kamala Khan's story continued beyond the series' cancellation in Giant-Size X-Men vol. 2 #1 (May 2025).
