History

The series was announced by Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort at the 'Future of Marvel Comics' X-Men and Digital Comics' panel at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 14, 2024, as one of six supplementary titles in the From the Ashes relaunch alongside X-Force, Phoenix, Storm, Wolverine, and X-Factor. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing — who had previously collaborated as 'Hivemind' on titles including Timeless — were drawn to the project out of personal investment in Academy X-era characters they felt had unfinished stories, and were given stewardship of Kamala Khan directly from her previous writers Iman Vellani and Sabir Pirzada. Artist Francesco Mortarino was recruited by editor Annalise Bissa, who oversaw the title; the main cover was provided by Sara Pichelli, with an extensive variant program featuring artists including Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau, Pablo Villalobos, Todd Nauck, Rogê Antônio, and Rickie Yagawa. The series ran ten issues before concluding in April 2025, with Kamala's story continuing in Giant-Size X-Men (vol. 2) #1.

• Sophie Cuckoo is formally broken off from her sisters as an individual character, attending ESU and aligning with the heroic cast while four of her sisters join the villainous New Quiet Council.
• The series is the second volume of NYX; the original 2003 series (written by Joe Quesada, art by Joshua Middleton) introduced X-23 to comics, and a six-issue sequel NYX: No Way Home was published in 2008–2009 by Marjorie Liu and Kalman Andrasofszky.
