“Shadow of Evils Past”

"Shadow of Evils Past" delivers a tense, character-driven showdown in a standout issue from the Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man series. Written by Roger Stern and illustrated by John Romita Jr. with inks by Dan Green, this 2021 release features a pivotal moment where Peter Parker confronts Harry Osborn’s secret—blackmailed by the Hobgoblin and dragged into a web of corruption that reaches into the city’s elite, including J. Jonah Jameson. The cover by John Romita Jr. captures the moment’s dread, while the story unfolds with a chilling twist: Spider-Man’s spider-sense fails, and the Kingpin steps in—unexpectedly—when the Hobgoblin strikes.

Peter attends a party at Harry's place. Harry gets a delivery and runs off after opening it. Peter tracks him down and discovers that Harry is being blackmailed by the Hobgoblin. Peter goes with Harry to the blackmail meeting where he discovers the Kingpin. There is a whole room of prominent businessmen who are being squeezed by the Hobgoblin, including J. Jonah Jameson. The Hobgoblin arrives to make his demands and is confronted by Spider-Man. Spider-Man is hit by a new and improved goblin-gas that knocks him down and robs him of his spider-sense. The Kingpin steps in to lend a hand.
