Marvel Fanfare was conceived by editor Al Milgrom as a fan-focused anthology printed on higher-quality paper normally reserved for comic covers, which necessitated a higher cover price and direct-market-only distribution. The series' original working title was 'Marvel Universe,' but that name was later claimed by editor-in-chief Jim Shooter for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe encyclopedia line. Milgrom's editorial vision — articulated in his recurring illustrated column 'Editori-Al,' which debuted in this very issue — was to attract the best available talent by offering a 50% bonus rate above standard page rates, with the trade-off that the title eventually struggled to compete financially once Marvel's regular titles began offering their own incentive payments. The lead story in issue #1 is widely believed by readers and historians to have originated as an unused Marvel Team-Up inventory story, given its page count, layout conventions, and the way it slots into the continuity of that era.
