About this Issue

Marvel Comics Presents #114 is the sixth chapter of Ann Nocenti and Steve Lightle's 'Typhoid's Kiss' serial, a psychologically ambitious arc that repositioned Typhoid Mary — a character Nocenti herself helped define during her Daredevil run — as the emotional center of a story probing dissociative identity, gendered violence, and morality through the Marvel superhero lens. The issue simultaneously advances two other multi-part serials: Dwayne McDuffie's 'Rest and Sweet Glory,' a rare spotlight on Bill Foster as Giant-Man fighting corporate villainy, and Joey Cavalieri and Shawn McManus's 'Legion of Vengeance,' which marks the first appearance of the disease-wielding villain Bacillus. Taken together, the three ongoing serials in this single bi-weekly anthology issue showcase MCP's distinctive function in early-1990s Marvel publishing — running character-driven experiments that the main line rarely had room for.

In "Typhoid's Kiss Part VI: Crisscross," Logan pushes deeper into the secrets of the Project, facing off against mercenaries in a relentless pursuit of Brian Roberts. Meanwhile, Mary closes in on the Project’s leader, setting the stage for a tense confrontation. Written by Ann Nocenti and illustrated by Steve Lightle, with colors by Carlos Lopez and letters by Michael Higgins, this 1992 issue delivers sharp momentum and rising stakes. The cover, a dynamic collaboration by Steve Lightle and Shawn McManus, captures the intensity of the moment.

History

Marvel Comics Presents launched in 1988 as a bi-weekly anthology built around four eight-page stories per issue, with the lead slot traditionally anchored by Wolverine and the remaining slots rotating among serials and standalone features. By the time #114 shipped on September 1, 1992, the book had settled into the flip-book format it adopted from issue #90 onward, with Tom DeFalco serving as editor-in-chief and Terry Kavanagh editing the Wolverine and associated serials. Ann Nocenti — already acclaimed for her long Daredevil run — brought the Typhoid Mary character she knew intimately into the anthology format alongside artist Steve Lightle, while Dwayne McDuffie scripted the Giant-Man backup with penciler Ron Wilson, and Joey Cavalieri and Shawn McManus handled the Ghost Rider/Iron Fist serial; the fourth slot went to a standalone Arabian Knight story by Gary Barnum and James Blackburn.
