About this Issue

Journey into Mystery #111 closes out the first genuine two-part thriller in Thor's Silver Age run, a storytelling ambition that was still novel for a superhero comic in 1964. The issue is notable for weaving the Asgardian mythology and the street-level action of the main Thor plot into a single, interdependent narrative: Balder's quest through the dangers of Asgard directly drives the resolution on Earth, signaling Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's growing confidence in treating the dual worlds as one continuous saga rather than separate compartments. It also marks the first appearances of Hardol the Healer and the Phantom Whose Touch Means Death, two Asgardian figures who expand the cosmology Lee and Kirby were building. The issue sits at the opening of what collectors and historians recognize as the stretch — issues #111–120 — where the Thor title fully matured into the cosmic mythological epic it would remain for decades.

In "The Power of the Thunder God!", Thor faces off against the Cobra and Mr. Hyde as Jane Foster's life hangs in the balance. With Odin's heart beginning to thaw thanks to Balder's intervention, Loki is sent to summon the mystic healer Hardol—only to be intercepted by the very gods he's meant to serve. Written by Stan Lee and brought to life with dynamic energy by Jack Kirby, this classic tale features bold artwork and a gripping race against time, with Chic Stone's inks adding depth to every panel. The cover by Jack Kirby and Chic Stone captures the epic stakes in a single, unforgettable image.

History

Written by Stan Lee and penciled by Jack Kirby, issue #111 was published with a cover date of December 1964 (on-sale date confirmed by Library of Congress periodical records). The inkers listed are Vince Colletta and Chic Stone — part of a revolving roster of finishers Kirby worked with during this period before Colletta settled in as the primary inker on the title. The story continues directly from issue #110, making it one of the earliest deliberate multi-part cliffhangers in the Thor series, and the letters page inside engages readers on the longstanding continuity puzzle of how Thor and Dr. Donald Blake can coexist — a sign of how invested the readership had already become in the book's internal logic.

Thor battles the Cobra and Mr. Hyde while Jane Foster hovers close to death. Odin's heart begins to soften towards Jane, thanks to the intervention of Balder. Odin, in his infinite wisdom, commands Loki to deliver a message to Hardol, the mystic healer, who lives beyond the molten chasm. Loki has no choice but to obey but is waylaid by Balder and some other gods who, for some reason, distrust him. Balder delivers the message himself. Thor defeats the Cobra and Hyde. Balder finds Hardol, obtains the medicine needed for Jane's recovery, and sends it to Thor in the nick of time. Jane will live!
