The issue was cover-dated January 1965 and published in November 1964, placing it squarely in the most prolific phase of the Lee–Kirby collaboration on the Thor title, roughly two years after the 'Tales of Asgard' backup feature had been introduced in issue #97 to give the series a mythological depth that set it apart from other Marvel books. The lead story was scripted by Stan Lee, penciled by Jack Kirby, and inked by Chic Stone, who also handled the cover inks over Kirby's pencils; the 'Tales of Asgard' backup was inked by Vince Colletta with lettering by Artie Simek. The narrative device of the main story — a flashback retcon expanding a scene from Avengers #3 — reflects Lee and Kirby's growing confidence in treating the early Marvel Universe as a continuous shared continuity whose unexplored corners could be revisited and enriched rather than simply ignored.
