Writer Stan Lee and artist Don Heck created Mister Hyde for the issue's lead story, which was released to newsstands in October 1963 with a December 1963 cover date. Jack Kirby penciled both the cover (inked by George Roussos) and the five-page 'Tales of Asgard' backup, while Don Heck handled the interior Thor story — a division of labor typical of the Lee-era Thor titles, where Kirby frequently contributed the mythological backups even when he did not draw the main feature. Lee's concept for Calvin Zabo was explicitly literary: the character consciously models himself on Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella, even recreating Jekyll's chemical formula in-story, making the Stevenson source text a diegetic element of the character's origin rather than merely an external inspiration.
