Invincible #49
Mark Grayson faces staggering odds on Ryan Ottley's cover for this 2008 Image Comics entry, where Invincible stands fist-raised and defiant against a massive, seemingly endless army of golden, red-eyed robots bearing American flag insignia. The sheer density of that mechanical horde pressing in from every angle makes the young hero's determination all the more striking. Robert Kirkman's series was proudly billing itself as "probably the best superhero comic book in the universe" by this point, and a cover like this — colored with vivid intensity by Bill Crabtree — makes a pretty compelling argument.
