About this Issue

Green Lantern Vol. 3 #82 earns its place in the key-issue column primarily as the cameo debut of Fatality (Yrra Cynril), one of the most durable new villains Ron Marz introduced during his long tenure on the title. In the issue's closing pages, set on the planet Ranagar, a shadowy figure ambushes and kills the Darkstar Galius Zed — a deliberately cryptic tease that pays off fully in the following issue's three-part 'Retribution' arc. Beyond the new-villain hook, the issue also functions as an important piece of post-'Final Night' continuity housekeeping, gathering Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Alan Scott together at Warriors bar to mourn Hal Jordan, reinforcing the emotional weight of a DC Universe still adjusting to the era's most controversial editorial decision.

History

The issue was written by Ron Marz, who had shepherded the Kyle Rayner Green Lantern since the 'Emerald Twilight' arc of 1994, with pencils by Tom Grindberg, inks by Romeo Tanghal and Bill Anderson, colors by Pamela Rambo, letters by Ken Lopez, and editing by Kevin Dooley. Marz co-created Fatality with artist Darryl Banks, though Banks did not draw this particular issue; Grindberg handled the art chores for the self-contained 'Adventures in Babysitting' story, leaving Fatality's cameo appearance deliberately obscured to build suspense. The issue carried a cover date of January 1997 and was published in both direct-sales and newsstand editions, placing it in the immediate aftermath of the 'Final Night' crossover in which Hal Jordan/Parallax sacrificed himself.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Cover-dated January 1997; part of Green Lantern Volume 3 (the 1990 ongoing series), issue #82.
  • Cameo first appearance of Fatality (Yrra Cynril): in the final scene, set on Ranagar, a mysterious figure kills Darkstar Galius Zed — her identity is not yet revealed to the reader.
  • Fatality's full first appearance and named debut occurs in the very next issue, Green Lantern Vol. 3 #83 (February 1997), in the 'Retribution: Part One' storyline.
  • Fatality was co-created by writer Ron Marz and artist Darryl Banks; her backstory ties directly to the earlier DC story 'Cosmic Odyssey,' in which John Stewart's error caused the destruction of the planet Xanshi, making Yrra Cynril its sole survivor.
  • The main story, titled 'Adventures in Babysitting,' reunites the four principal Green Lanterns of the era — Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Alan Scott — at Guy Gardner's Warriors bar for a night of sharing memories of the recently deceased Hal Jordan.
  • Creative team for this issue: writer Ron Marz, penciler Tom Grindberg, inkers Romeo Tanghal and Bill Anderson, colorist Pamela Rambo, letterer Ken Lopez, editor Kevin Dooley.
  • The issue was published in both a direct-sales edition and a newsstand edition (confirmed by the Grand Comics Database).
  • Fatality went on to become a recurring antagonist across the Marz run, later joined the Sinestro Corps, and was eventually redeemed as a member of the Star Sapphires in the Geoff Johns era — making this cameo the seed of a character arc spanning more than fifteen years of DC continuity.
