About this Issue

Giant-Size Defenders #5 is the final issue of its anthology series and serves as the launch pad for one of the most ambitious crossovers in Marvel's Bronze Age: the full team-up between the Defenders and the original, 31st-century Guardians of the Galaxy. It also delivers the first appearance of Vance Astrovik — the teenage boy who would later become Marvel Boy and then Justice, a founding member of the New Warriors and eventual Avenger — establishing the foundational time-travel paradox that the Guardians' own Vance Astro is an alternate-future version of this same kid. At only their third non-reprint appearance in print, the original Guardians of the Galaxy here finally broke out of near-obscurity and into a multi-issue storyline that would define the team for years.

History

The lead story, 'Eelar Moves in Mysterious Ways!', was scripted by Steve Gerber from a plot hammered out in an impromptu Marvel bullpen session involving Gerry Conway, Roger Slifer, Len Wein, Chris Claremont, and staff writer Scott Edelman — one of the most crowded co-plotting credits in Bronze Age Marvel. Don Heck pencilled, with inks divided among Mike Esposito, Dave Hunt, and Jim Mooney, and the issue was edited by Len Wein under editor-in-chief Marv Wolfman. Bittersweet production history surrounds it: the opening pages were among the very last work completed by beloved Silver Age letterer Artie Simek, who had lettered Marvel comics since the early 1960s and passed away on February 20, 1975 — a fact the issue's own letters page notes in tribute. The issue was placed on sale April 22, 1975, with a July 1975 cover date.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Vance Astrovik (later Marvel Boy, then Justice), the present-day Earth-616 counterpart to Guardians member Vance Astro / Major Victory — created by Don Heck and Gerry Conway.
  • Third non-reprint appearance overall of the original 31st-century Guardians of the Galaxy (Earth-691): Vance Astro, Charlie-27, Martinex T'Naga, and Yondu Udonta.
  • Final issue of the Giant-Size Defenders series (five issues, 1974–1975); the Defenders/Guardians storyline it launches continues in Defenders #26–29.
  • Lead story plotted by six people — Steve Gerber, Gerry Conway, Roger Slifer, Len Wein, Chris Claremont, and Scott Edelman — making it one of the most crowded co-plotting credits of the Bronze Age; Gerber wrote the script, Heck drew it.
  • The opening pages of 'Eelar Moves in Mysterious Ways!' were the final professional work of veteran Marvel Silver Age letterer Artie Simek, who died February 20, 1975; the letters page acknowledges this.
  • Contains a reprint of the lead story from Daredevil #62 ('Quoth the Nighthawk, "Nevermore!"'), written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Gene Colan, presenting Nighthawk as a villain before his Defenders membership — providing origin context for his flashback appearance in the main story.
  • Vance Astrovik's parents are named Tom and Mary in their first appearance here; later continuity retcons their names to Arnold and Norma.
  • Reprinted in Essential Defenders Vol. 2 (2006), Guardians of the Galaxy: Earth Shall Overcome (2009), Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow's Avengers #1 (2012), Marvel Masterworks: The Defenders Vol. 4 (2014), the Guardians of the Galaxy Epic Collection: Earth Shall Overcome (2023), and The Defenders Omnibus Vol. 2 (2023).
