History

Ram V was announced as the new ongoing writer in April 2022, replacing Mariko Tamaki and returning Detective Comics to a monthly schedule after the 'Shadows of the Bat' weekly crossover event. The creative team of Ram V, penciler Rafael Albuquerque (best known for co-creating American Vampire with Scott Snyder), and Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart was assembled with the explicit editorial mandate to push the title toward gothic horror, an aesthetic Ram V described as 'a quintessentially Batman story told with the aesthetics of a gothic opera.' The backup feature was simultaneously launched by writer Si Spurrier and artist DaNi, with each story intended to weave organically into the lead. The issue shipped July 26, 2022, with a main cover by Evan Cagle and a wide variant program including covers by Lee Bermejo, J.H. Williams III (in both standard and 1:50 foil versions), and InHyuk Lee; demand prompted a second printing with new cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco.
