Detective Comics #1062
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeDetective Comics #1062 marks the debut of one of the most ambitious Batman runs of the 2020s, inaugurating writer Ram V and artist Rafael Albuquerque's 'Gotham Nocturne' saga — a sprawling, opera-structured gothic epic that ran from #1062 through #1089 and redefined Detective Comics as a horror-inflected, character-driven title distinct from the rest of the Batman line. The issue introduces the Orgham family, a brand-new supernatural villain clan whose in-universe backstory rewrites Gotham City's founding mythology by retroactively linking them to the Arkham name itself, giving the city's most infamous institution centuries of additional, sinister context. It also inaugurates a two-story anthology format for the series, with Si Spurrier and artist DaNi launching a concurrent noir-flavored backup strip following Jim Gordon's return to Gotham — a structural choice that echoed the Bronze Age Detective Comics playbook of pairing a lead feature with a shorter investigative story. The run's scope and collected longevity, culminating in a 2026 omnibus edition, confirm #1062 as the foundational chapter of a genuinely consequential Batman publishing era.
In "Gotham Nocturne: Overture Part 1," Batman disrupts a high-stakes smuggling run only to find himself grappling with unsettling physical distortions, as if his own body has begun to betray him. Meanwhile, Talia alerts Bruce to an imminent danger, and across the world, a man named Arzen prepares to journey to Gotham on a mission tied to his family’s legacy.
In "The Endless Line," Neal Adams reflects on the power of imagination and innovation, as the characters he helped bring to life—some from his own work, others from the broader DC Universe—gather in a quiet, reverent moment to express their gratitude. Written by a longtime admirer of Adams’s legacy, the story is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring impact of creative vision.

Ram V was announced as the new ongoing writer in April 2022, replacing Mariko Tamaki and returning Detective Comics to a monthly schedule after the 'Shadows of the Bat' weekly crossover event. The creative team of Ram V, penciler Rafael Albuquerque (best known for co-creating American Vampire with Scott Snyder), and Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart was assembled with the explicit editorial mandate to push the title toward gothic horror, an aesthetic Ram V described as 'a quintessentially Batman story told with the aesthetics of a gothic opera.' The backup feature was simultaneously launched by writer Si Spurrier and artist DaNi, with each story intended to weave organically into the lead. The issue shipped July 26, 2022, with a main cover by Evan Cagle and a wide variant program including covers by Lee Bermejo, J.H. Williams III (in both standard and 1:50 foil versions), and InHyuk Lee; demand prompted a second printing with new cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of the Orgham family — specifically Prince Arzen Orgham, Queen Dariah Orgham, Gael Tenclaw, Neang Modhram, and Shavhod Erhad — whose in-universe history frames them as the original landlords of colonial Gotham and direct ancestors of the Arkham family name (a 1853 surname change by Loricius Orgham becoming 'Arkham' for business reasons).
- Kicks off 'Gotham Nocturne: Overture, Part 1,' the opening chapter of the four-part Overture arc and the first act of Ram V's extended 'Gotham Nocturne' storyline, which ultimately ran through Detective Comics #1089 and the 2022 Annual.
- Lead story written by Ram V with art by Rafael Albuquerque and colors by Dave Stewart; backup story 'The Coda, Part 1 of 3' written by Si Spurrier with art and colors by DaNi — establishing a dual-feature format maintained across the run.
- The backup story reintroduces James Gordon as a private investigator, explicitly set at least one year after 'The Joker War,' with Gordon's return to Gotham following the events of The Joker (2021) #1–15.
- Barbatos (the Dark Multiverse deity) appears in a Bruce Wayne dream sequence, connecting Batman's creeping psychological dread to deeper supernatural underpinnings rather than purely psychological ones.
- The issue contains a three-page tribute to Neal Adams — published across multiple DC titles that same month in July 2022 following Adams's death — featuring Adams's own words quoted from The Comics Journal #72 (May 1982).
- Shipped with five cover editions: main cover by Evan Cagle, variants by Lee Bermejo, J.H. Williams III (including a 1:50 foil card stock edition), and a 1:25 incentive variant by InHyuk Lee; a second printing with cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco followed.
- The full run beginning with this issue was collected in multiple trade paperback volumes (Vol. 1 through Vol. 4-plus) and solicited in a comprehensive omnibus edition (Batman: Detective Comics by Ram V Omnibus, on-sale September 2026) spanning 1,096 pages.
