DC Comics – The New 52 FCBD Special Edition #1 served as a pivotal connective tissue issue for the entire New 52 publishing initiative, delivering the first concrete origin of the Trinity of Sin — Pandora, the New 52 Question, and the Phantom Stranger — and establishing them as the structural backbone of the upcoming Trinity War crossover event. The issue also contains the first appearances (unnamed cameos in a flash-forward) of Simon Baz as a new Green Lantern and Rhonda Pineda as the Atom, both of whom would become significant characters in the New 52 Justice League era. As a free, mass-distributed book handed out on May 5, 2012, it gave the widest possible readership an accessible entry point into DC's next phase of storytelling, simultaneously functioning as a teaser for the publisher's six 'Second Wave' titles and as genuine narrative groundwork for what Geoff Johns was building across the Justice League family of titles.

History

Written by Geoff Johns with art from Jim Lee (with Scott Williams on inks), Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Gene Ha, and Kenneth Rocafort, the book was announced by DC in January 2012 as its contribution to Free Comic Book Day and was distributed on May 5, 2012. The issue grew organically out of the threads Johns had been seeding since Flashpoint: Pandora had appeared as a background figure in every single New 52 #1 issue in September 2011, and a teaser in Justice League #6 had already begun to hint at the Phantom Stranger's connection to her. This FCBD issue was the payoff — and the launching pad — for a wave of 'Trinity of Sin' solo series and the 2013 Trinity War crossover, with the Phantom Stranger's New 52 ongoing series announced shortly after publication.

Contains the first appearance of Rhonda Pineda / Atomica (unnamed cameo in a flash-forward), created by Geoff Johns and Jesús Saíz; she would later be revealed as an Earth-3 Crime Syndicate spy posing as the Atom within the Justice League.
Presents the first New 52 origin of the Trinity of Sin: Pandora, the Phantom Stranger (strongly implied to be Judas Iscariot, condemned with a necklace of silver pieces), and the Question (whose face and name are stripped as punishment by the Circle of Eternity at the Rock of Eternity).
The epilogue flash-forward previews the Trinity War battle scene later shown in full in Justice League vol. 2 #23, depicting a Justice League member wielding Pandora's Box fighting against the combined hero community.
