"Time and Time Again!" is the second chapter of what became the template for every company-wide crossover that followed, cementing the Crisis on Infinite Earths as the event that formally divided DC's publishing history into pre- and post-Crisis eras. This issue is the primary engine for deploying the Monitor's assembled cast—heroes and villains pulled from across DC's entire timeline—to defend the antimatter-wave-blocking tower devices, a narrative device that let Wolfman and Pérez showcase the full breadth of the DC Multiverse one final time. The issue introduces the central dramatic engine of the Psycho-Pirate's subordination to the Anti-Monitor, plants the seeds of Harbinger's coming betrayal, and offers the first significant in-story appearance of Alexander Luthor, Jr. on the Monitor's satellite, setting up his critical role in the series' conclusion. It also delivers one of the run's most haunting visual moments: a ghost-like Flash materializing before Batman and the Joker only to dissolve before their eyes, foreshadowing Barry Allen's eventual sacrifice six issues later.

History

Crisis on Infinite Earths grew out of Marv Wolfman's frustration with the DC Multiverse, which he felt was hostile to new readers; his solution—pitched to DC president Jenette Kahn, executive editor Dick Giordano, and Paul Levitz—was a company-wide maxi-series that would collapse the Multiverse into a single unified Earth. DC even hired a researcher in 1982 to catalog the entire publishing library, a project that took two years and contributed to the series being pushed back from 1982 to 1985 so it could also serve as DC's fiftieth anniversary centerpiece. George Pérez, initially slated only as penciller, eventually came aboard as co-plotter as well, with the two building on the creative shorthand they had already developed on The New Teen Titans. Dick Giordano inked the early issues, including this one, though mounting deadlines from his concurrent role as DC vice president would eventually necessitate handing later issues to Jerry Ordway.
