After being ambushed and nearly sold into slavery, he takes refuge with the fortune teller Momratha, whose visions hint at a darker path ahead. Meanwhile, Yusuf and Tara flee after Yusuf kills a captain who wronged Tara, and Conan is captured—refusing to betray his friends even under pressure. When he escapes from the courthouse, he confronts the corrupt judge Ephemero Portus, and on horseback, he leaves the city behind, leaving his companions to their fate.
